Understanding get and put in ftp

Lets say
I am in directory A and A has a 1GB file called file1
I want to transfer that file to directory B

I open ftp from directory A and use ‘put file1’
I get the transfer complete message.
Where does this transfer take place?
how can i download file1 from directory B?

If your FTP is connected then you use PUT to upload/transfer a file and GET to download the file. Is anything else other than this unclear to you??

is get filename and put filename the correct syntax?

it works. but correct syntax is get/put directory/sourcefile directory/destinationfile
